How can you help the Y?

Building Bridges campaign

YMCAThe YMCA's annual Building Bridges Campaign is our principal means of asking the communities we serve to help us make our services available to those who cannot afford to pay. Your tax deductible gift will make it possible for us to:

  • send homeless and low-income children to overnight camp;

  • lower the cost of day care for a working parent;

  • provide instruction for the physically challenged;

  • help people achieve economic self-sufficiency;

  • support area food banks;

  • provide free meals to children who need them;

  • care for children before and after school;

  • counsel teens to stay in school and off drugs;

  • provide our wellness programs and social services to everyone regardless of ability to pay;

  • and more.

Last year the partnership between area companies, foundations, organizations, private citizens and the YMCA made it possible for us to invest over $2 million in day care, after-school and wellness programs for children in need.

This year, we need to raise even more. Therefore, we hope that when a YMCA volunteer visits, calls or writes you about this very special campaign that you choose to become a YMCA supporter by making the largest possible gift you can. Together we can continue the YMCA's 146-year tradition of building strong kids, strong families, and a stronger community in which we can all live and prosper.

THE LEGACY CONTINUES

giftsFor over 150 years, the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington has been dedicated to the spiritual, mental and physical development of children, families and adults in our nation's capital area. The YMCA offers many significant programs designed to provide opportunities to work, play and learn individually and with others. The YMCA touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of people through its wide variety of social services and fitness programs which include: preschool and school-age child care; summer day camp; after-school activities; teen leadership programs; mentoring programs; basketball leagues; adult and family wellness facilities and classes; intergenerational programs; parenting classes; and special events. By providing a supervised, safe and stimulating environment, the YMCA builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

WE BUILD STRONG KIDS…

Children are growing up in a complex world and experiencing complex emotional issues. The YMCA provides opportunities for children to be children and fosters them through youth development, child care, wellness, sports and recreational programs that help children to grow up healthy.

THE YMCA:

  • focuses on character development and emphasizes four core values - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility;

  • provides safe places for kids where conflict resolution and social skills are taught and practiced;

  • guides children as they build confidence, learn leadership and decision-making skills;

  • uses an innovative curriculum and highly qualified staff to prepare children for academic success.

WE BUILD STRONG FAMILIES…

The YMCA offers programs that bring parents and children together, giving families a chance to strengthen their relationships in a safe, caring, and welcoming environment. THE YMCA:

  • responds to the child care needs of working parents by offering affordable services including infant, preschool and school-age child care, before- and after-school care, plus a wide variety of summer camps;

  • provides meaningful opportunities for parent support with formal and informal experiences;

  • promotes healthy lifestyles and self-esteem through fitness and wellness activities that contribute to overall health.

WE BUILD STRONG COMMUNITIES…

The YMCA celebrates diversity and designs its programs to meet the needs of the community. THE YMCA:

  • promotes the well-being of all people regardless of race, creed, national origin, gender or religion;

  • respects the rights of each person to enjoy a safe, secure and fulfilling experience, free of physical, psychological and emotional harm or danger;

  • serves all ages, all abilities, and all incomes;

  • uses the commitment and support of volunteers to support its many programs.
